Book Illustration
Having studied wildlife illustration, Nature plays a central role in my images, though I no longer follow the precise traditions of botanical illustration.
The landscape is often as much character as the people and animals who live within the storybook world.
My aim is that the viewer can see beyond the page, over a hill into the valley below or imagine walking through the woods to the village or coast.
I love to let the reality of observational drawing blend into the playful, looser, and more colourful illustrations I create with gouache, pencil, and watercolour.
Research is an important part of my process; I spend time drawing from life, observing animals, plants, and environments as they shift with the seasons. Visits to museums, zoos, and natural spaces help deepen my understanding, while regular life drawing and collaboration with other artists keep my practice evolving.
Different mediums can bring out different styles. It is always fun choosing materials that best suit the tone of each story. Each project is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Ultimately, I hope my illustrations offer a sense of wonder and invite the viewer into the world of the story. Where image and narrative work together, and imagination can grow and wander freely.
